Exports from Myanmar

For the tenth consecutive year, Myanmar recorded growth in overseas shipments of photographic paper, paperboard and textiles, which increased by 966% to X square meters in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, photographic paper exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a significant expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Malaysia (X square meters) was the main destination for photographic paper exports from Myanmar, accounting for a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, photographic paper exports to Malaysia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Thailand (X square meters), eightfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Malaysia stood at +1,461.1%.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the key foreign market for photographic paper, paperboard and textiles exports from Myanmar, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Malaysia amounted to +1,173.7%.

The average photographic paper export price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, declining by -12.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a slight downturn. In 2021, supplies from abroad of photographic paper, paperboard and textiles decreased by -86.9% to X square meters, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 274%. Imports peaked at X square meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, photographic paper imports fell markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 184% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the United States (X square meters) constituted the largest photographic paper supplier to Myanmar, accounting for a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, photographic paper imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X square meters), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Singapore (X square meters), with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States totaled +7.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-0.1% per year) and Singapore (-10.2% per year).

The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from the United States stood at +7.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-12.5% per year) and Singapore (-16.6% per year).

In 2021, the average photographic paper import price amounted to $X per square meter, reducing by -5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 32%. The import price peaked at $X per square meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per square meter), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
