Potato Market Size in Morocco

The Moroccan potato market contracted modestly to $X in 2019, flattening at the previous year. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports attained the maximum at X tonnes in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2019, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, potato exports soared to $X in 2019. In general, exports recorded a slight expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Exports peaked at $X in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2019, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mali (X tonnes) was the main destination for potato exports from Morocco, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, potato exports to Mali exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tonnes), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Senegal (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2019, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Mali totaled +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+X% per year) and Senegal (+X% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for potato exported from Morocco were Mali ($X), Mauritania ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for X% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Mauritania (+X% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average potato export price stood at $X per tonne in 2019, which is down by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of X% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2019, export prices failed to regain the momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2019, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Mali ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mali, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Morocco

In 2019, supplies from abroad of potatoes decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tonnes in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2019, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato imports reduced to $X in 2019. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2012 to 2019, the growth imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2019, the Netherlands (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Morocco, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, potato imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X tonnes), threefold. Denmark (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.
