For the sixth year in a row, the Middle Eastern sweet potato market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by X% against 2016 indices. Sweet Potato Production in the Middle East

In value terms, sweet potato production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by X% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of sweet potato production was Israel (X tons), comprising approx. X% of total volume. Moreover, sweet potato production in Israel exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Palestine (X tons), with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Israel stood at X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Syrian Arab Republic (X% per year) and Palestine (X% per year).

The average sweet potato yield expanded remarkably to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of X% on 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the sweet potato yield reached the peak level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the sweet potato harvested area in the Middle East reduced to X ha, which is down by X% against 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the harvested area increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the sweet potato harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Sweet Potato Exports

Exports in the Middle East

For the fourth year in a row, the Middle East recorded decline in shipments abroad of sweet potatoes, which decreased by X% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports saw a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sweet potato exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Israel represented the largest exporter of sweet potatoes in the Middle East, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2022. Oman (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Palestine (X%), Turkey (X%) and the United Arab Emirates (X%). The following exporters - Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sweet potato exports from Israel stood at X%. At the same time, Palestine (X%), Turkey (X%) and Oman (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Palestine emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (X%), Saudi Arabia (X%) and Syrian Arab Republic (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Israel, Palestine, Turkey and Oman increased by X, X, X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Export price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sweet potato export price decreased by X% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Turkey ($X per ton) and Oman ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) and Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, sweet potato imports in the Middle East soared to X tons, rising by X% on the previous year. Overall, imports showed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, sweet potato imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a prominent expansion. Imports by Country

In terms of the main importing countries, Qatar, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by X% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
