For the fifth year in a row, the Middle Eastern hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -3% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 7.4% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in the Middle East

In 2021, overseas shipments of hypochlorites, commercial calcium hypochlorite, chlorites and hypobromites increased by 31% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +81.4% against 2017 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +90.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Jordan represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 51% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Iran (X tons), together making up a 43% share of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Oman (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Jordan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hypochlorites, commercial calcium hypochlorite, chlorites and hypobromites exports, with a CAGR of +26.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Iran (+13.7%) and the United Arab Emirates (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-5.2%) and Oman (-13.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Jordan (+41 p.p.) and Iran (+5.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Oman, Turkey and Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -10.1%, -10.6% and -20% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites supplying countries in the Middle East were Jordan ($X), Turkey ($X) and Iran ($X), with a combined 85% share of total exports.

Jordan, with a CAGR of +33.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2021, overseas purchases of hypochlorites, commercial calcium hypochlorite, chlorites and hypobromites decreased by -15.7% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites imports contracted modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Israel was the largest importer of hypochlorites, commercial calcium hypochlorite, chlorites and hypobromites in the Middle East, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 37% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Bahrain (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons), together constituting a 44% share of total imports.

Israel was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hypochlorites, commercial calcium hypochlorite, chlorites and hypobromites imports, with a CAGR of +21.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bahrain (+4.7%), Jordan (+2.3%) and Oman (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Iraq (-6.4%), the United Arab Emirates (-6.5%) and Lebanon (-12.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Israel (+31 p.p.) and Bahrain (+3.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon saw its share reduced by -4.6%, -8.5% and -10.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites importing markets in the Middle East were Israel ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Jordan ($X), together comprising 59% of total imports.

Israel, with a CAGR of +13.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, rising by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 24% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
