In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of household articles and toilet articles of plastics, when their volume decreased by -8.2% to X tons. Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +43.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. Turkey was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 67% of total exports. Israel (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Iran (X tons). All these countries together took near 28% share of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +11.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iran (+13.5%) and Israel (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +13.5% from 2012-2022. The United Arab Emirates experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Saudi Arabia (-14.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+27 p.p.) and Iran (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by -5.4%, -5.7% and -17% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest plastic household articles supplier in the Middle East, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with a 28% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 4.9% share.

In Turkey, plastic household articles exports increased at an average annual rate of +10.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Israel (+4.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+3.2% per year).

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Kuwait (X tons), Iran (X tons), Oman (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Bahrain (X tons), Yemen (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (with a CAGR of +23.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Israel ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 61% of total imports. Iraq, Turkey, Kuwait, Qatar, Iran, Yemen, Oman, Bahrain, Lebanon and Syrian Arab Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

Iraq, with a CAGR of +13.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 1.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
