The Middle Eastern frozen pork cut market shrank modestly to $X in 2022, which is down by -3.2% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a strong expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in the Middle East

In 2022, the amount of frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat exported in the Middle East surged to X tons, growing by 37% against the year before. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 712% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen pork cut exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 264% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented the major exporter of frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat, committing 64% of total exports. Turkey (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Lebanon (X tons). All these countries together took near 34% share of total exports. Saudi Arabia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to frozen pork cut exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at +29.4%. At the same time, Lebanon (+44.0%) and Turkey (+21.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lebanon emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +44.0% from 2012-2022. Saudi Arabia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Turkey (+19 p.p.), Lebanon (+8.9 p.p.) and Saudi Arabia (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates (-15.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest frozen pork cut supplier in the Middle East, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Lebanon, with a 5.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates amounted to +30.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+14.4% per year) and Lebanon (+24.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the Middle East stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -32.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 153%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the Middle East

In 2022, imports of frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat in the Middle East fell to X tons, shrinking by -8.5% against 2021. Total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -19.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 56%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen pork cut imports dropped to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The United Arab Emirates prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 85% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Qatar (X tons), constituting a 6.3% share of total imports. Turkey (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to frozen pork cut imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at +1.6%. At the same time, Qatar (+89.4%), Jordan (+16.0%) and Turkey (+10.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Qatar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of +89.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Bahrain (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Qatar (+6.3 p.p.) and Turkey (+3.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Bahrain saw its share reduced by -5.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
