Dried Onion Market Size in the Middle East

Iran (X tonnes) constituted the country with the largest volume of dried onion production, accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, dried onion production in Iran exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Syrian Arab Republic (X tonnes), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Yemen (X tonnes), with a X% share.

In Iran, dried onion production increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2007-2020. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Syrian Arab Republic (-X% per year) and Yemen (+X% per year).

In 2020, approx. X tonnes of dried onions were exported in the Middle East; declining by -X% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tonnes in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dried onion exports declined sharply to $X in 2020. In general, exports saw a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2020, Oman (X tonnes) and Saudi Arabia (X tonnes) were the key exporters of dried onions in the Middle East, together amounting to approx. X% of total exports. Palestine (X tonnes) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Jordan (X%) and Turkey (X%). The following exporters - Iran (X tonnes) and the United Arab Emirates (X tonnes) - together made up X% of total exports.

The level of export peaked at $X per tonne in 2010; however, from 2011 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.

In 2020, overseas purchases of dried onions were finally on the rise to reach X tonnes for the first time since 2016, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2020 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, dried onion imports surged to $X in 2020. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, imports increased by +X% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. From 2009 to 2020, the growth in terms of the import prices failed to regain the momentum.
