Grain Market Size in the Middle East
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Middle Eastern grain market, when its value increased by X% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Grain Production in the Middle East
In value terms, grain production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by X%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
The country with the largest volume of grain production was Turkey (X tons), comprising approx. X% of total volume. Moreover, grain production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Iran (X tons), twofold. Iraq (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an X% share.
In Turkey, grain production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Iran (X% per year) and Iraq (X% per year).
The average grain yield expanded significantly to X tons per ha in 2022, surging by X% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the grain yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The grain harvested area rose to X ha in 2022, with an increase of X% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the harvested area increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to grain production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Grain Exports
Exports in the Middle East
Grain exports contracted sharply to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of X% on 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, grain exports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of X%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined notably in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Turkey (X tons) represented the major exporter of cereal grains, generating X% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Oman (X%) and Jordan (X%). The following exporters - Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and Iran (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to grain exports from Turkey stood at X%. At the same time, Oman (X%), Syrian Arab Republic (X%), Jordan (X%) and Iran (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the Middle East, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (X p.p.), Oman (X p.p.), Syrian Arab Republic (X p.p.) and Jordan (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey totaled X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (X% per year) and Oman (X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the Middle East amounted to $X per ton, rising by X% against the previous year. Export price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, grain export price increased by X% against 2018 indices.
