Exports in MENA
In 2022, exports of leather in MENA declined to X square meters, dropping by X% compared with the year before. In general, exports saw a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. The volume of export peaked at X square meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, leather exports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Turkey was the main exporting country with an export of around X square meters, which recorded X% of total exports. Algeria (X square meters) held a X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Saudi Arabia (X%) and Egypt (X%). Morocco (X square meters), Iran (X square meters) and Iraq (X square meters) held a little share of total exports.
Exports from Turkey decreased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Algeria (X%) and Morocco (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Iran (X%), Egypt (X%), Saudi Arabia (X%) and Iraq (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Algeria (X p.p.), Turkey (X p.p.) and Morocco (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Iraq and Saudi Arabia saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest leather supplier in MENA, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with an X% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey stood at X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (X% per year) and Morocco (X% per year).

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per square meter, rising by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per square meter), while Algeria ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA
In 2022, overseas purchases of leather increased by X% to X square meters, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild descent. The volume of import peaked at X square meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, leather imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Turkey represented the major importing country with an import of about X square meters, which recorded X% of total imports. Tunisia (X square meters) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Morocco (X%). The following importers - Iran (X square meters) and the United Arab Emirates (X square meters) - each amounted to a X% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to leather imports into Turkey stood at X%. At the same time, Iran (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. The United Arab Emirates and Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Iran (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Turkey (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by X%.
