Exports in MENA

In 2022, overseas shipments of construction sands decreased by -13.8% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports showed a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 65%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, construction sands exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 142%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Tunisia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) dominates exports structure, together creating 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Jordan (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together making up a 24% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +32.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Jordan ($X), Egypt ($X) and Tunisia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 73% share of total exports.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +20.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 53% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a prominent increase. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+25.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of construction sands were imported in MENA; declining by -10.2% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, construction sands imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Palestine (X tons) represented the largest importer of construction sands, committing 69% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Bahrain (X tons), achieving a 23% share of total imports. Oman (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Palestine increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Oman (+20.5%) and Bahrain (+15.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of +20.5% from 2012-2022. Bahrain (+13 p.p.), Palestine (+8.8 p.p.) and Oman (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Palestine ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported construction sands in MENA, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bahrain ($X), with a 16% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Palestine was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bahrain (+16.2% per year) and Oman (+6.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -3.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 8.2% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while Bahrain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bahrain (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
