After five years of growth, overseas shipments of gin and geneva decreased by -23.6% to X litres in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 140% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X litres, and then declined significantly in the following year.
In value terms, gin and geneva exports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Brazil prevails in exports structure, amounting to X litres, which was approx. 69% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Venezuela (X litres) and Suriname (X litres), together comprising a 17% share of total exports. The following exporters - Peru (X litres), Argentina (X litres) and Ecuador (X litres) - together made up 9.4% of total exports.
Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the gin and geneva exports, with a CAGR of +82.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Peru (+47.7%), Venezuela (+34.5%), Ecuador (+23.3%) and Suriname (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Argentina (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Brazil, Suriname, Venezuela and Peru increased by +68, +8.5, +6.7 and +3.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest gin and geneva supplying countries in MERCOSUR were Brazil ($X), Venezuela ($X) and Peru ($X), with a combined 77% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Brazil, with a CAGR of +81.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per litre, jumping by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 103%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Venezuela ($X per litre), while Suriname ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+17.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MERCOSUR
Gin and geneva imports expanded to X litres in 2022, picking up by 3.7% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 86%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, gin and geneva imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Brazil represented the key importing country with an import of around X litres, which finished at 59% of total imports. Argentina (X litres) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Chile (13%) and Colombia (4.6%). The following importers - Paraguay (X litres), Uruguay (X litres) and Peru (X litres) - together made up 6.8% of total imports.
Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the gin and geneva imports, with a CAGR of +61.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Paraguay (+43.9%), Chile (+37.5%), Argentina (+29.0%), Uruguay (+22.3%), Peru (+21.4%) and Colombia (+7.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Brazil (+51 p.p.), Chile (+4 p.p.) and Paraguay (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Uruguay, Peru, Argentina and Colombia saw its share reduced by -2.3%, -2.5%, -4.5% and -32.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gin and geneva in MERCOSUR, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with an 18% share.
In Brazil, gin and geneva imports expanded at an average annual rate of +50.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (+28.0% per year) and Chile (+27.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per litre, rising by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Paraguay ($X per litre), while Brazil ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Paraguay (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
