In 2021, the MERCOSUR cosmetics market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Cosmetics Production in MERCOSUR
In value terms, cosmetics production rose remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.
Cosmetics Exports
Exports in MERCOSUR
After two years of decline, overseas shipments of cosmetics increased by 13% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight contraction. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cosmetics exports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 9.9%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Colombia (X tons) was the largest exporter of cosmetics, comprising 62% of total exports. Brazil (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Chile (X tons) and Argentina (X tons). All these countries together took near 34% share of total exports. Peru (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cosmetics exports from Colombia stood at +2.8%. At the same time, Brazil (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +2.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Chile (-8.0%), Argentina (-8.1%) and Peru (-13.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Colombia and Brazil increased by +18 and +5.3 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the largest cosmetics supplying countries in MERCOSUR were Colombia ($X), Brazil ($X) and Argentina ($X), with a combined 87% share of total exports.
Brazil, with a CAGR of +1.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, declining by -4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 4.1%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Cosmetics Imports
Imports in MERCOSUR
In 2021, approx. X tons of cosmetics were imported in MERCOSUR; growing by 21% against 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, cosmetics imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Chile represented the major importer of cosmetics in MERCOSUR, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 33% of total imports in 2021. Colombia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Argentina (X tons), Peru (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons). All these countries together took near 59% share of total imports. Venezuela (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cosmetics imports, with a CAGR of +16.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Peru (+7.3%) and Colombia (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Ecuador, Argentina and Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Venezuela (-16.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Chile (+23 p.p.), Peru (+3.8 p.p.) and Colombia (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Ecuador (-2 p.p.), Argentina (-4.2 p.p.), Brazil (-4.4 p.p.) and Venezuela (-12.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

Chile, with a CAGR of +8.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MERCOSUR stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a mild decrease. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Venezuela ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
