In 2022, overseas shipments of coniferous wood in the rough decreased by -0.5% to X cubic meters for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, posted a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 171%. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coniferous wood in the rough exports fell modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate notable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 176%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uruguay dominates exports structure, recording X cubic meters, which was near 92% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Colombia (X cubic meters) and Argentina (X cubic meters) - together made up 6% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to coniferous wood in the rough exports from Uruguay stood at +15.2%. At the same time, Colombia (+47.0%) and Argentina (+44.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +47.0% from 2012-2022. Uruguay (+65 p.p.), Colombia (+3.8 p.p.) and Argentina (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Uruguay ($X) remains the largest coniferous wood in the rough supplier in MERCOSUR, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Colombia ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

In Uruguay, coniferous wood in the rough exports increased at an average annual rate of +11.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Colombia (+42.3% per year) and Argentina (+44.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per cubic meter, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate slight growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 14%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per cubic meter), while Uruguay ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (-0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, purchases abroad of coniferous wood in the rough was finally on the rise to reach X cubic meters after six years of decline. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 89% against the previous year. Over the period under review, coniferous wood in rough imports attained the maximum at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coniferous wood in the rough imports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 89% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Venezuela represented the key importing country with an import of about X cubic meters, which reached 64% of total imports. Peru (X cubic meters) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Suriname (X cubic meters). All these countries together held approx. 34% share of total imports.

Imports into Venezuela increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Suriname (+16.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Suriname emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +16.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Peru (-26.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Venezuela (+58 p.p.) and Suriname (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Peru saw its share reduced by -66.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Venezuela ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coniferous wood in the rough in MERCOSUR, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Peru ($X), with an 11% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Venezuela stood at +12.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Peru (-27.8% per year) and Suriname (+16.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per cubic meter, reducing by -3.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, coniferous wood in the rough import price increased by +18.2% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 38% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Venezuela ($X per cubic meter), while Peru ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
