In 2022, the amount of cigarettes containing tobacco exported in MERCOSUR skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 16% on the year before. In general, exports, however, showed a mild downturn. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil was the key exporter of cigarettes containing tobacco in MERCOSUR, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 48% of total exports in 2022. Chile (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 21% share, followed by Paraguay (20%) and Uruguay (6.4%). Argentina (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cigarettes containing tobacco exports, with a CAGR of +47.0% from 2012 to 2022. Chile (-4.6%), Paraguay (-7.2%), Uruguay (-9.5%) and Argentina (-13.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brazil (+47 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay saw its share reduced by -7.6%, -7.6%, -8.4% and -15.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Chile ($X) and Paraguay ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 87% share of total exports.

Brazil, with a CAGR of +43.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, surging by 5.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 6.3% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MERCOSUR

In 2022, purchases abroad of cigarettes containing tobacco decreased by -8.4% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Colombia dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 57% of total imports in 2022. Suriname (X tons) took an 8.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Venezuela (7.1%), Paraguay (6.5%), Chile (5.7%) and Guyana (4.6%). Brazil (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cigarettes containing tobacco imports into Colombia stood at +4.6%. At the same time, Venezuela (+38.3%), Brazil (+23.8%), Chile (+5.2%), Suriname (+2.4%) and Guyana (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Venezuela emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MERCOSUR, with a CAGR of +38.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Paraguay (-6.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Colombia (+10 p.p.), Venezuela (+6.7 p.p.) and Brazil (+3.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Paraguay saw its share reduced by -10.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Colombia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cigarettes containing tobacco in MERCOSUR, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Suriname ($X), with an 8% share of total imports. It was followed by Venezuela, with a 7.9% share.

In Colombia, cigarettes containing tobacco imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Suriname (-6.4% per year) and Venezuela (+40.0% per year).

In 2022, the import price in MERCOSUR amounted to $X per ton, falling by -1.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a pronounced descent.
