Exports by Country

Turkey represented the key exporter of playing cards in MENA, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 48% of total exports in 2022. Tunisia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Israel (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 43% share of total exports. The following exporters - the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Iran (X tons) - together made up 7.5% of total exports.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +20.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Israel (+51.7%), Oman (+34.5%) and Iran (+19.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +51.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-11.8%) and Tunisia (-13.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+42 p.p.), Israel (+21 p.p.) and Oman (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the United Arab Emirates and Tunisia saw its share reduced by -7.9% and -58.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Israel ($X), Turkey ($X) and Tunisia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 84% share of total exports.

Israel, with a CAGR of +56.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, surging by 2.3% against the previous year. Export price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, playing cards export price decreased by -11.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 48%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of playing cards decreased by -34% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 76%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +38.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of playing cards imports in 2022 were the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Israel (X tons), Yemen (X tons), Libya (X tons), Iraq (X tons) and Djibouti (X tons), together resulting at 67% of total import. Algeria (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Morocco (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons). All these countries together took near 15% share of total imports. Turkey (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Djibouti (with a CAGR of +21.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Import price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, playing cards import price increased by +56.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 35%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
