Frozen Whole Fish Exports

Exports in MENA

In 2023, the amount of frozen whole fish exported in MENA rose modestly to X tons, increasing by X% compared with 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen whole fish exports amounted to $X in 2023. In general, exports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by X%. The level of export peaked in 2023 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Morocco represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached X% of total exports. Oman (X tons) held a X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Turkey (X%), Yemen (X%) and Iran (X%). The United Arab Emirates (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Iran (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest frozen whole fish supplying countries in MENA were Turkey ($X), Morocco ($X) and Oman ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. Iran, Yemen and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

Iran, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2023, overseas purchases of frozen whole fish were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2023, Egypt (X tons) represented the key importer of frozen whole fish, mixing up X% of total imports.
