In 2021, after seven years of growth, there was significant decline in the MENA's wood box market, when its value decreased by -6.6% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, showed resilient growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, wood box production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 25%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in MENA
In 2021, exports of cases, boxes, crates, drums and similar packings of wood in MENA reduced slightly to X units, which is down by -2.9% against the year before. Total exports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +19.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wood box exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 29%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Bahrain represented the key exporter of cases, boxes, crates, drums and similar packings of wood in MENA, with the volume of exports amounting to X units, which was approx. 54% of total exports in 2021. Turkey (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X units). All these countries together took approx. 40% share of total exports. The following exporters - Palestine (X units) and Israel (X units) - each reached a 3.5% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Palestine (with a CAGR of +19.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wood box supplying countries in MENA were Bahrain ($X), Turkey ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), together accounting for 90% of total exports. These countries were followed by Palestine and Israel, which together accounted for a further 6.4%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Palestine, with a CAGR of +17.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in MENA stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 17%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Palestine ($X per unit), while Bahrain ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+9.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in MENA
In 2021, approx. X units of cases, boxes, crates, drums and similar packings of wood were imported in MENA; reducing by -4.8% against 2020 figures. In general, imports showed a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 37%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wood box imports declined modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Morocco (X units) and Oman (X units) were the key importers of cases, boxes, crates, drums and similar packings of wood in 2021, accounting for approx. 27% and 24% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X units), Israel (X units), the United Arab Emirates (X units) and Tunisia (X units), together generating a 37% share of total imports. Jordan (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Morocco (with a CAGR of +9.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Tunisia ($X), Oman ($X) and Israel ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 42% of total imports.
Tunisia, with a CAGR of +25.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per unit, rising by 3.3% against the previous year. Import price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wood box import price increased by +29.4% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Morocco ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
