Canned Vegetable Exports

Exports in MENA

After four years of growth, overseas shipments of canned vegetables decreased by -9.9% to X tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, canned vegetable exports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Turkey was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 45% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons), together generating a 40% share of total exports. Jordan (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Israel (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tunisia (with a CAGR of +20.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest canned vegetable supplier in MENA, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey stood at +5.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+1.7% per year) and Egypt (+9.7% per year).

In 2022, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 7.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the third year in a row, MENA recorded decline in purchases abroad of canned vegetables, which decreased by -36.7% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 19%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, canned vegetable imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), distantly followed by Israel (X tons), Yemen (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Libya (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) were the largest importers of canned vegetables, together committing 74% of total imports. Qatar (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Lebanon (X tons), Oman (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Israel (with a CAGR of +12.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest canned vegetable importing markets in MENA were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Israel ($X) and Iraq ($X), together accounting for 50% of total imports.

Israel, with a CAGR of +11.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, growing by 21% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
