The Malaysian tomato puree market reduced to $X in 2022, shrinking by -5.9% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Tomato puree consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Malaysia
In 2022, shipments abroad of tomato puree and paste decreased by -0.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 57%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, tomato puree exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 58%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Oman (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main destinations of tomato puree exports from Malaysia, together comprising 47% of total exports. Burkina Faso, Gambia, the United Arab Emirates, Guinea, Angola, Togo, Mali, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam and Benin lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Brunei Darussalam (with a CAGR of +39.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for tomato puree exported from Malaysia were Indonesia ($X), Guinea ($X) and Oman ($X), together comprising 62% of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Guinea, with a CAGR of +28.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average tomato puree export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 2.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 40%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Guinea (+19.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Malaysia
In 2022, purchases abroad of tomato puree and paste was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tomato puree imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of tomato puree to Malaysia, with a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, tomato puree imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Chile (X tons), fourfold. Turkey (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Chile (+45.4% per year) and Turkey (+15.3% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tomato puree and paste to Malaysia, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Chile (+49.1% per year) and Turkey (+11.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average tomato puree import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
