For the fourth consecutive year, Malaysia recorded growth in overseas shipments of polycarboxylic acids, which increased by 35% to X tons in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +101.1% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 35%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, polycarboxylic acid exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a tangible increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Oman (X tons) was the main destination for polycarboxylic acid exports from Malaysia, accounting for a 33% share of total exports. Moreover, polycarboxylic acid exports to Oman exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, India (X tons), twofold. Turkey (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Oman totaled +67.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+7.1% per year) and Turkey (+42.9% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for polycarboxylic acid exported from Malaysia were Oman ($X), India ($X) and Turkey ($X), together comprising 45% of total exports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, China, the United States, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Thailand, Egypt, Singapore and Pakistan, which together accounted for a further 48%.
Among the main countries of destination, Egypt, with a CAGR of +189.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average polycarboxylic acid export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 39% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight reduction. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Egypt (+9.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Malaysia
In 2021, overseas purchases of polycarboxylic acids increased by 21% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, polycarboxylic acid imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a perceptible setback. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of polycarboxylic acid imports to Malaysia, together comprising 69% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +23.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest polycarboxylic acid suppliers to Malaysia were Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), China ($X) and South Korea ($X), with a combined 71% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Japan and India, which together accounted for a further 24%.
In terms of the main suppliers, India, with a CAGR of +20.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average polycarboxylic acid import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 31% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a mild contraction. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (-2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
