Pistachio Market Size in Malaysia

The Malaysian pistachio market fell modestly to $X in 2019, dropping by -X% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009 when the market value increased by X% against the previous year. Pistachio consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2019, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Malaysia

In 2019, shipments abroad of pistachios decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2019, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pistachio exports declined rapidly to $X in 2019. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2019, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Indonesia (X tonnes), Thailand (X tonnes) and Sri Lanka (X tonnes) were the main destinations of pistachio exports from Malaysia, with a combined X% share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2019, the biggest increases were in Indonesia (+X% per year), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for pistachio exported from Malaysia were Indonesia ($X), Thailand ($X) and Sri Lanka ($X), together accounting for X% of total exports.

Indonesia recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2019, the average pistachio export price amounted to $X per tonne, surging by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, average export prices reached the maximum at $X per tonne in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2019, export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2019, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Malaysia

In 2019, approx. X tonnes of pistachios were imported into Malaysia; which is down by -X% on 2018 figures. Overall, imports, however, posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2009 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2019, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pistachio imports fell to $X in 2019. In general, imports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. Iran lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further X 2007 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Iran, while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the U.S. ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pistachio to Malaysia, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by China ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2019, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the U.S. stood at +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+X% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+X% per year).

In 2019, the average pistachio import price amounted to $X per tonne, increasing by X% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated temperate growth from 2007 to 2019: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last twelve-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of X% y-o-y. The import price peaked in 2019 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
