Photographic Paper Market Size in Malaysia

In 2021, the Malaysian photographic paper market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a deep contraction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, photographic paper production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. From 2015 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Photographic Paper Exports

Exports from Malaysia

In 2021, shipments abroad of photographic paper, paperboard and textiles decreased by -9.8% to X square meters, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 95% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X square meters. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, photographic paper exports expanded to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 94% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Bangladesh (X square meters) was the main destination for photographic paper exports from Malaysia, accounting for a 57% share of total exports. Moreover, photographic paper exports to Bangladesh exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Singapore (X square meters), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Vietnam (X square meters), with a 5.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Bangladesh stood at +124.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (-11.3% per year) and Vietnam (+25.6% per year).

In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) remains the key foreign market for photographic paper, paperboard and textiles exports from Malaysia, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Angola, with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Bangladesh totaled +122.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (-16.7% per year) and Angola (+42.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average photographic paper export price amounted to $X per square meter, picking up by 16% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 24%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per square meter in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Pakistan ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+11.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Malaysia

In 2021, overseas purchases of photographic paper, paperboard and textiles increased by 15% to X square meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X square meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, photographic paper imports expanded to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the United States (X square meters) constituted the largest photographic paper supplier to Malaysia, with a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, photographic paper imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X square meters), twofold. Myanmar (X square meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States stood at -13.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+61.0% per year) and Myanmar (+256.6% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X), South Korea ($X) and Japan ($X) constituted the largest photographic paper suppliers to Malaysia, with a combined 76% share of total imports. Myanmar, China, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

In terms of the main suppliers, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +1,401.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average photographic paper import price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, which is down by -9.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 5.3% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per square meter), while the price for Singapore ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
