Desktop computer exports from Malaysia fell to X units in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -24.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 82%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, desktop computer exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The United States (X units), Australia (X units) and Singapore (X units) were the main destinations of desktop computer exports from Malaysia, together accounting for 52% of total exports. Vietnam, Thailand, China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Thailand (with a CAGR of +175.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Australia ($X), the United States ($X) and Singapore ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for desktop computer exported from Malaysia worldwide, with a combined 54% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Thailand, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, China, the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 35%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Thailand, with a CAGR of +118.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average desktop computer export price amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the third consecutive year, Malaysia recorded growth in overseas purchases of desktop computers, which increased by 29% to X units in 2021. Overall, imports recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 430%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, desktop computer imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 224% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest desktop computer supplier to Malaysia, accounting for a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, desktop computer imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Singapore (X units), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Japan (X units), with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +47.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (+7.8% per year) and Japan (+29.7% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of desktop computer to Malaysia, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 6.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +29.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+20.1% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+12.4% per year).

The average desktop computer import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 71% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a deep contraction. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per unit), while the price for Singapore ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+18.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
