Dolomite Market Size in Malaysia

In 2021, the Malaysian dolomite market decreased by -4.8% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a significant expansion. Dolomite consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Malaysia

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of chalk and dolomite decreased by -54.7% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a temperate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 535% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dolomite exports reduced sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 165% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Vietnam (X tons), Brunei Darussalam (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) were the main destinations of dolomite exports from Malaysia, with a combined 76% share of total exports. These countries were followed by China, New Zealand, Thailand, Belgium and India, which together accounted for a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for New Zealand (with a CAGR of +129.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brunei Darussalam ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Bangladesh ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for dolomite exported from Malaysia worldwide, with a combined 52% share of total exports. These countries were followed by China, India, New Zealand, Thailand and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 33%.

New Zealand, with a CAGR of +68.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average dolomite export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 43% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 56% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+34.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Dolomite Imports

Imports into Malaysia

In 2021, supplies from abroad of chalk and dolomite decreased by -11.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, imports, however, recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 304% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dolomite imports rose slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 217% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Thailand (X tons), Switzerland (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the main suppliers of dolomite imports to Malaysia, with a combined 74% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +46.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest dolomite suppliers to Malaysia were Switzerland ($X), Norway ($X) and Thailand ($X), together comprising 70% of total imports.

Norway, with a CAGR of +53.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average dolomite import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 40% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
