In 2021, shipments abroad of uncoated kraft liner was finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, uncoated kraft liner exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Brazil prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Costa Rica (X tons), making up a 5.7% share of total exports. Argentina (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Brazil increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Argentina (+27.4%) and Costa Rica (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Argentina emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +27.4% from 2012-2021. Argentina (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest uncoated kraft liner supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Costa Rica ($X), with a 5.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil totaled +5.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Costa Rica (+9.3% per year) and Argentina (+28.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, surging by 30% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Costa Rica (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Uncoated Kraft Liner Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of uncoated kraft liner increased by 13% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, uncoated kraft liner imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Mexico (X tons) represented the largest importer of uncoated kraft liner, generating 43% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Guatemala (X tons), Chile (X tons), Argentina (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons) and Colombia (X tons), together mixing up a 39% share of total imports. Honduras (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to uncoated kraft liner imports into Mexico stood at +4.1%. At the same time, Colombia (+21.7%), the Dominican Republic (+4.4%) and Guatemala (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +21.7% from 2012-2021. Honduras experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Argentina (-1.0%) and Chile (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mexico, Colombia and Guatemala increased by +5.5, +4.2 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
