Unbleached Sulphite Pulp Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, overseas shipments of unbleached sulphite pulp decreased by -0.4% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports showed a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 367%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unbleached sulphite pulp exports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 631% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Chile (X tons), together reaching 100% of total export.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the unbleached sulphite pulp exports, with a CAGR of +48.4% from 2012 to 2022. Chile (+99 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) also remains the largest unbleached sulphite pulp supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In Chile, unbleached sulphite pulp exports expanded at an average annual rate of +51.3% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. Export price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, unbleached sulphite pulp export price increased by +57.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Chile.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Chile amounted to +2.0% per year.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, imports of unbleached sulphite pulp in Latin America and the Caribbean surged to X tons, rising by 247% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports posted a tangible increase. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unbleached sulphite pulp imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 72% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Peru (X tons) was the main importer of unbleached sulphite pulp, committing 59% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Chile (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons), together creating a 35% share of total imports. Costa Rica (X tons) and Venezuela (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to unbleached sulphite pulp imports into Peru stood at +16.4%. At the same time, Ecuador (+109.2%), Costa Rica (+82.3%), Brazil (+3.8%) and Mexico (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ecuador emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +109.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Chile (-7.7%) and Venezuela (-21.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Peru, Ecuador and Costa Rica increased by +41, +5.2 and +3.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest unbleached sulphite pulp importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Brazil ($X), Peru ($X) and Ecuador ($X), with a combined 70% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Ecuador, with a CAGR of +86.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, falling by -52.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 70%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+15.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
