Table Linen Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, the Latin American table linen market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the market value increased by 8.5% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, table linen production rose markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 9.2% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of table linen, knitted or crocheted was finally on the rise to reach X tons after five years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, table linen exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, faced a abrupt decline. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mexico prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 75% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Guatemala (X tons) and the Dominican Republic (X tons), together comprising a 15% share of total exports. Brazil (X tons), Chile (X tons) and El Salvador (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Mexico decreased at an average annual rate of -8.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Guatemala (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guatemala emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +7.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Chile (-2.1%), El Salvador (-3.6%), Brazil (-7.9%) and the Dominican Republic (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mexico (+6.4 p.p.) and Guatemala (+6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest table linen supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Guatemala ($X), with a 5.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 3.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mexico amounted to -10.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Guatemala (+11.6% per year) and Brazil (-8.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while the Dominican Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by El Salvador (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of table linen, knitted or crocheted increased by 40% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild descent. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Chile (X tons), distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and Peru (X tons) were the largest importers of table linen, knitted or crocheted, together achieving 66% of total imports. Costa Rica (X tons), Colombia (X tons), Panama (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons), El Salvador (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Chile (with a CAGR of +7.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest table linen importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Brazil ($X), Chile ($X) and Mexico ($X), with a combined 56% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Peru, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Uruguay and Argentina, which together accounted for a further 32%.

Among the main importing countries, El Salvador, with a CAGR of +9.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 5.6%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
