Slaked Lime Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

Slaked lime exports soared to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 49% compared with 2020 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, slaked lime exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Guatemala (X tons) represented the main exporter of slaked lime, making up 36% of total exports. Brazil (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Argentina (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and Colombia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 56% share of total exports. Honduras (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from Guatemala increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Colombia (+94.1%), the Dominican Republic (+60.9%), Brazil (+25.3%) and Argentina (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +94.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Honduras (-2.8%) and Mexico (-11.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brazil (+14 p.p.), Guatemala (+8.7 p.p.), the Dominican Republic (+8.6 p.p.) and Colombia (+5.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Honduras and Mexico saw its share reduced by -3.3% and -24.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Guatemala ($X) remains the largest slaked lime supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 38% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Dominican Republic ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Mexico, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Guatemala totaled +12.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Dominican Republic (+56.3% per year) and Mexico (-8.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 19%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, purchases abroad of slaked lime increased by 21% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, imports continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, slaked lime imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 156% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Chile (X tons), El Salvador (X tons), Nicaragua (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons) represented roughly 71% of total imports in 2021. Costa Rica (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Uruguay (X tons) and Panama (X tons). All these countries together held near 18% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Nicaragua (with a CAGR of +39.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest slaked lime importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Chile ($X), Nicaragua ($X) and El Salvador ($X), together comprising 57% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Nicaragua, with a CAGR of +40.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 6.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Panama ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
