For the fifth year in a row, the Latin American pistachio market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption continues to indicate a buoyant increase. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Pistachio Production in Latin America and the Caribbean

In value terms, pistachio production expanded notably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of pistachio production was Argentina (X tons), comprising approx. X% of total volume. Moreover, pistachio production in Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Peru (X tons), eightfold. Mexico (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a X% share.

In Argentina, pistachio production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Peru (X% per year) and Mexico (X% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of pistachios in Latin America and the Caribbean dropped slightly to X tons per ha, with a decrease of X% on the previous year. Overall, the yield saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the pistachio yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of pistachios were harvested in Latin America and the Caribbean; surging by X% compared with 2021. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the pistachio harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Pistachio Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, the amount of pistachios exported in Latin America and the Caribbean shrank to X tons, which is down by X% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pistachio exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Argentina dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Guatemala (X tons), generating a X% share of total exports. Mexico (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Argentina was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pistachios exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mexico (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Guatemala (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Argentina (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mexico and Guatemala saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

Over the period under review, the export price recorded a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of X%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, pistachio imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Mexico prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. X% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), committing a X% share of total imports.
