Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, approx. X tons of frozen potatoes prepared or preserved were exported in Latin America and the Caribbean; with an increase of 14% compared with the year before. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -1.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 42%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, preserved frozen potato exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 43%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Argentina prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2021. Brazil (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 16%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Guatemala ($X per ton), while Jamaica ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
