In 2021, after seven years of growth, there was significant decline in the Latin American wooden door market, when its value decreased by -12.1% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, wooden door production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +57.7% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 12%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

For the seventh consecutive year, LatAmerica and the Caribbean recorded growth in overseas shipments of doors and their frames and thresholds of wood, which increased by 15% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, wooden door exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a resilient expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Brazil was the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which accounted for 62% of total exports. Mexico (X units) took a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Chile (13%). Guatemala (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wooden door exports from Brazil stood at +9.9%. At the same time, Mexico (+17.2%), Chile (+7.9%) and Guatemala (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mexico emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +17.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of Mexico (+9.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Chile (-2.1 p.p.) and Guatemala (-2.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest wooden door supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Chile, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil stood at +12.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (+18.3% per year) and Chile (+6.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per unit, surging by 21% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Mexico ($X per unit) and Guatemala ($X per unit), while Brazil ($X per unit) and Chile ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of doors and their frames and thresholds of wood, when their volume increased by 16% to X units. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wooden door imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Panama (X units), distantly followed by Honduras (X units), El Salvador (X units), Jamaica (X units), Uruguay (X units) and the Dominican Republic (X units) represented the largest importers of doors and their frames and thresholds of wood, together creating 49% of total imports. Costa Rica (X units), Haiti (X units), Guatemala (X units), Mexico (X units), Bahamas (X units), Trinidad and Tobago (X units) and Nicaragua (X units) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Panama increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Guatemala (+18.6%), the Dominican Republic (+17.3%), El Salvador (+11.4%), Jamaica (+8.8%), Honduras (+6.1%), Uruguay (+4.5%), Bahamas (+3.5%), Haiti (+3.3%) and Nicaragua (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guatemala emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +18.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Trinidad and Tobago (-4.4%), Costa Rica (-5.7%) and Mexico (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Panama (+7.9 p.p.), El Salvador (+4.4 p.p.), the Dominican Republic (+3.7 p.p.), Jamaica (+3.6 p.p.), Honduras (+3.3 p.p.) and Guatemala (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Trinidad and Tobago (-1.7 p.p.), Mexico (-3.1 p.p.) and Costa Rica (-3.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest wooden door importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Panama ($X), Bahamas ($X) and Jamaica ($X), with a combined 29% share of total imports. The Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico, El Salvador, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti and Nicaragua lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 5.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 16%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Bahamas ($X per unit), while Haiti ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
