Dolomite Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, the Latin American dolomite market decreased by -3.5% to $X for the first time since 2011, thus ending a nine-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +95.1% against 2012 indices. In value terms, dolomite production shrank modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +91.4% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 29%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Dolomite Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, the amount of chalk and dolomite exported in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to X tons, rising by 8.3% against the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate a measured increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 104% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dolomite exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +30.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 38%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) represented the largest exporter of chalk and dolomite, making up 66% of total exports. Argentina (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Guatemala (X tons). All these countries together took near 29% share of total exports. The following exporters - Colombia (X tons) and Peru (X tons) - each amounted to a 4.6% share of total exports.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chalk and dolomite exports, with a CAGR of +9.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Guatemala (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Argentina (-3.0%), Colombia (-3.7%) and Peru (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brazil (+24 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Colombia, Peru and Argentina saw its share reduced by -2.4%, -3.1% and -17.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest dolomite supplying countries in Latin America and the Caribbean were Brazil ($X), Guatemala ($X) and Argentina ($X), together accounting for 88% of total exports.

Guatemala, with a CAGR of +11.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, surging by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 67%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Dolomite Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

Dolomite imports rose significantly to X tons in 2021, growing by 11% on 2020. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +16.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 22%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dolomite imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a slight reduction. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons) represented the largest importers of chalk and dolomite in 2021, resulting at approx. 43% and 34% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Chile (X tons) and Costa Rica (X tons), together making up a 17% share of total imports. Ecuador (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +24.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Chile ($X) and Paraguay ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 68% of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
