The Latin American aluminium hydroxide market contracted significantly to $X in 2021, shrinking by -26.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted resilient growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, aluminium hydroxide production contracted rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 97% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2021, overseas shipments of aluminium hydroxide decreased by -0.5% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, aluminium hydroxide exports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 51%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Brazil represented the largest exporter of aluminium hydroxide in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Jamaica (X tons), comprising a 12% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to aluminium hydroxide exports from Brazil stood at +9.7%. At the same time, Jamaica (+13.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Jamaica emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +13.3% from 2012-2021. Jamaica (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest aluminium hydroxide supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Jamaica ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.
In Brazil, aluminium hydroxide exports increased at an average annual rate of +11.5% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Jamaica stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+1.7%).

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2021, approx. X tons of aluminium hydroxide were imported in Latin America and the Caribbean; with an increase of 4.7% compared with the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, aluminium hydroxide imports amounted to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 24%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Mexico (X tons) was the major importer of aluminium hydroxide, achieving 43% of total imports. Argentina (X tons) held a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Colombia (8.7%) and Chile (5.9%). Peru (X tons), Uruguay (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Uruguay (with a CAGR of +18.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mexico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported aluminium hydroxide in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mexico was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (-0.2% per year) and Brazil (+2.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 5.8% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+14.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
