Tanzania (X kg) was the main destination for optical fiber and bundle exports from Kenya, with a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, optical fiber and bundle exports to Tanzania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uganda (X kg), fivefold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Tanzania totaled +45.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uganda (+7.1% per year) and Somalia (-8.1% per year).
In value terms, Uganda ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Somalia ($X) constituted the largest markets for optical fiber and bundle exported from Kenya worldwide, together comprising 60% of total exports.
Tanzania, with a CAGR of +36.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average optical fiber and bundle export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 50% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 128% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (+15.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Kenya
In 2021, optical fiber and bundle imports into Kenya surged to X tons, jumping by 116% on 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 224% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, optical fiber and bundle imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 496%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, India (X tons) constituted the largest optical fiber and bundle supplier to Kenya, with a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, optical fiber and bundle imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the UK (X tons), with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from India totaled -5.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+93.5% per year) and the UK (+51.2% per year).
In value terms, India ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and the UK ($X) constituted the largest optical fiber and bundle suppliers to Kenya, with a combined 92% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +75.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average optical fiber and bundle import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -34.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average import price increased by 84%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
