Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 586%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wood pellets exports reduced notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 585%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Russia (X tons) was the main destination for wood pellets exports from Kazakhstan, with a 84% share of total exports. Moreover, wood pellets exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Uzbekistan (X kg), fivefold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Russia amounted to +20.6%.
In value terms, Russia ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for wood pellets exported from Kazakhstan worldwide.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Russia, with a CAGR of +13.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review.

The average wood pellets export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 82% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced descent. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (-5.9%).
Wood Pellets Imports
Imports into Kazakhstan
For the fourth consecutive year, Kazakhstan recorded growth in overseas purchases of wood pellets, which increased by 7.4% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 116% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, wood pellets imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 161%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Russia (X tons) was the main supplier of wood pellets to Kazakhstan, with a 98% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany (X tons), with a 1.3% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Russia stood at +38.3%.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wood pellets to Kazakhstan, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 5.9% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Russia stood at +23.6%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average wood pellets import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 9.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Russia amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+1.1%).
