The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs in 2020 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

France (X tonnes) was the main destination for unmanufactured tobacco exports from Japan, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, unmanufactured tobacco exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Russia (X tonnes), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Belgium (X tonnes), with a X% share.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports fell to $X in 2020. In general, imports showed a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2020, Brazil (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of unmanufactured tobacco to Japan, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, unmanufactured tobacco imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the U.S. (X tonnes), twofold. Tanzania (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume from Brazil stood at -X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the U.S. (-X% per year) and Tanzania (+X% per year).

In value terms, Brazil ($X), the U.S. ($X) and Tanzania ($X) were the largest unmanufactured tobacco suppliers to Japan, together comprising X% of total imports. The average unmanufactured tobacco import price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the last thirteen-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when the average import price increased by X% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per tonne in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, import prices failed to regain the momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per tonne), while the price for Viet Nam ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
