China (X tons) was the main destination for footwear treatments exports from Japan, accounting for a 43% share of total exports. Moreover, footwear treatments exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), twofold. South Korea (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China stood at +8.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+32.7% per year) and South Korea (+6.7% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for footwear treatments exports from Japan, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with an 8.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China totaled +6.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+21.9% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-2.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average footwear treatments export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -6.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 6.7% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Japan
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of polishes and creams for footwear or leather, when their volume increased by 21% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, footwear treatments imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 40%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), France (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of footwear treatments imports to Japan, together comprising 73% of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, the UK, the United States, Indonesia and South Korea, which together accounted for a further 22%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in the UK (with a CAGR of +11.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest footwear treatments suppliers to Japan were France ($X), Germany ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 64% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, France, with a CAGR of +13.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
