Photographic Film Market Size in Japan

The Japanese photographic film market expanded significantly to $X in 2020, rising by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2020, overseas shipments of photographic plates and film, photographic paper, paperboard and textiles and instant print film, sensitized, unexposed decreased by -X% to X square meters, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports reached the peak figure at X square meters in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, photographic film exports fell significantly to $X in 2020. In general, exports saw a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

Taiwan (Chinese) (X square meters), China (X square meters) and South Korea (X square meters) were the main destinations of photographic film exports from Japan, together accounting for X% of total exports. The U.S., the Netherlands, Mexico, Thailand, Israel, India and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Thailand, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for photographic film exported from Japan were China ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and South Korea ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the U.S., the Netherlands, Germany, India, Israel, Thailand and Mexico, which together accounted for a further X Netherlands recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average photographic film export price stood at $X per square meter in 2020, waning by -X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate notable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2012 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, export prices failed to regain the momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was the U.S. ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Japan

For the fourth year in a row, Japan recorded growth in supplies from abroad of photographic plates and film, photographic paper, paperboard and textiles and instant print film, sensitized, unexposed, which increased by X% to X square meters in 2020. Over the period under review, imports saw a temperate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2020 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, photographic film imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2020. In general, imports saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2020, China (X square meters) constituted the largest supplier of photographic film to Japan, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, photographic film imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X square meters), fourfold. Germany (X square meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+X% per year) and Germany (+X% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of photographic film to Japan, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+X% per year) and France (+X% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average photographic film import price stood at $X per square meter in 2020, shrinking by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of X% year-to-year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2015 to 2020, the growth in terms of the average import prices failed to regain the momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was France ($X per square meter), while the price for South Korea ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium, while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
