In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Hong Kong SAR (X tonnes) was the main destination for nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports from Japan, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports to Hong Kong SAR exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Indonesia (X kg), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Thailand (X kg), with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Hong Kong SAR totaled +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Indonesia (-X% per year) and Thailand (-X% per year).
It was followed by Indonesia, with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Hong Kong SAR stood at +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (-X% per year) and Indonesia (-X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average nutmeg, mace and cardamom export price stood at $X per tonne in 2021, rising by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Canada ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Japan
Nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports into Japan expanded markedly to X tonnes in 2021, growing by X% on 2020. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of X% y-o-y. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tonnes; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports stood at $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +X% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
