Mercury Market Size in Japan

In 2021, the Japanese mercury market decreased by -X% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. Mercury consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mercury exports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Argentina (X tonnes) was the main destination for mercury exports from Japan, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, mercury exports to Argentina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Peru (X tonnes), threefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Argentina amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Peru (+X% per year) and India (-X% per year).

In value terms, Argentina ($X) remains the key foreign market for mercury exports from Japan, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Peru ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Argentina stood at +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Peru (+X% per year) and India (-X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average mercury export price amounted to $X per tonne, with a decrease of -X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per tonne in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was India ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Argentina ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of mercuries decreased by -X% to X kg in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tonnes, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, mercury imports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a tangible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth imports failed to regain momentum.
