Mate Market Size in Japan

The Japanese mate market reduced sharply to $X in 2020, waning by -X% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the market value increased by X% year-to-year. In 2020, shipments abroad of mate increased by X% to X tonnes, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. Export Prices by Country

The average mate export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, which is down by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Japan

Mate imports into Japan declined sharply to X tonnes in 2020, with a decrease of -X% against the year before. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate modest growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of X% y-o-y. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tonnes. from 2019 to 2020, the growth imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mate imports dropped notably to $X in 2020. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a mild expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. from 2019 to 2020, the growth imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2020, Brazil (X tonnes) constituted the largest mate supplier to Japan, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, mate imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Argentina (X tonnes), sixfold.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Brazil stood at +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (-X% per year) and Paraguay (-X% per year).

Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, import prices failed to regain the momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per tonne), while the price for Paraguay ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
