In 2023, shipments abroad of frozen fish and seafood decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, frozen fish and seafood exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2023. In general, total exports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by X% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined significantly in the following year.

China (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the main destinations of frozen fish and seafood exports from Japan, together accounting for X% of total exports. Egypt, Nigeria, Indonesia, the United States, the Philippines, Taiwan (Chinese), Malaysia, Ghana and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
