Carbonate Market Size in Japan

The Japanese carbonate market totaled $X in 2021, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a slight shrinkage. Carbonate consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Carbonate Production in Japan

In value terms, carbonate production shrank slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Carbonate production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Japan

Carbonate exports from Japan dropped slightly to X tons in 2021, waning by -2.4% on 2020. Overall, exports showed a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 14%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, carbonate exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Korea (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of carbonate exports from Japan, with a combined 49% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Taiwan (Chinese), the United States, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 36%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Taiwan (Chinese) (with a CAGR of +6.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for carbonate exported from Japan were South Korea ($X), China ($X) and the United States ($X), with a combined 56% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +4.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average carbonate export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Japan

In 2021, approx. X tons of carbonates and peroxocarbonates were imported into Japan; increasing by 4.8% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, carbonate imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest carbonate supplier to Japan, accounting for a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, carbonate imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold. Chile (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-4.3% per year) and Chile (+5.1% per year).

In value terms, Chile ($X), China ($X) and the United States ($X) constituted the largest carbonate suppliers to Japan, with a combined 81% share of total imports. Germany, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7.4%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Singapore, with a CAGR of +105.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average carbonate import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 34%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+9.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
