In value terms, banana and plantain exports fell notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then plummeted in the following year.
Exports by Country
The Philippines (X tonnes) was the main destination for banana and plantain exports from Japan, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, banana and plantain exports to the Philippines exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Singapore (X kg), ninefold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Philippines totaled +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+X% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-X% per year).
In value terms, the Philippines ($X) remains the key foreign market for banana and plantain exports from Japan, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a X% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the Philippines totaled +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (-X% per year) and Singapore (+X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average banana and plantain export price amounted to $X per tonne, waning by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of X% year-to-year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per tonne. From 2014 to 2021, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Banana and plantain imports into Japan rose slightly to X tonnes in 2021, increasing by X% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, banana and plantain imports dropped slightly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years.
