Tea Market Size in Italy

In 2020, the Italian tea market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated tangible growth from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Tea consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, consumption failed to regain the momentum.

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of tea decreased by -X% to X tonnes in 2020. Over the period under review, exports recorded a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, exports reached the peak of X tonnes, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, tea exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2020. Overall, exports showed a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011 with an increase of X% y-o-y. As a result, exports reached the peak of $X. From 2012 to 2020, the growth exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Bulgaria (X tonnes), Malta (X tonnes) and Romania (X tonnes) were the main destinations of tea exports from Italy, together accounting for X% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, the UK, the Netherlands, Lithuania, France and Germany, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Lithuania (+X% per year), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for tea exported from Italy were France ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Malta ($X), together accounting for X% of total exports. These countries were followed by Bulgaria, Lithuania, Germany, Romania, the Czech Republic and the UK, which together accounted for a further X (+X% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, the average tea export price amounted to $X per tonne, with an increase of X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per tonne in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, export prices failed to regain the momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was France ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Bulgaria ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2020; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, tea imports surged to $X in 2020. In general, total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of X% year-to-year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2020, the growth imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2020, the UK (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of tea to Italy, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, tea imports from the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sri Lanka (X tonnes), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by India (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the UK amounted to +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (-X% per year) and India (+X% per year).
