For the third consecutive year, the Italian manuka market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 12% to $X in 2022. In general, the total consumption indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by +0.8% against 2018 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, manuka production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X tons of manuka were exported from Italy; falling by -31.6% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports saw a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 125% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, manuka exports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 54%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Ireland (X tons), Germany (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of manuka exports from Italy, together accounting for 59% of total exports. The UK, Spain, Romania, the United States, Belgium, Finland, the Netherlands and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +30.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and Ireland ($X) were the largest markets for manuka exported from Italy worldwide, with a combined 50% share of total exports. The UK, the United States, Switzerland, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Romania and Finland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

Among the main countries of destination, Romania, with a CAGR of +16.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average manuka export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of manuka increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, manuka imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +32.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In 2022, Hungary (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of manuka to Italy, with a 31% share of total imports. Moreover, manuka imports from Hungary exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Romania (X tons), twofold. Ukraine (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Hungary stood at +5.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Romania (+9.9% per year) and Ukraine (+33.0% per year).

In value terms, Hungary ($X) constituted the largest supplier of manuka to Italy, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Romania ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Hungary stood at +5.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Romania (+12.0% per year) and Spain (+10.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average manuka import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
