In 2021, shipments abroad of magnesium was finally on the rise to reach X tonnes for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tonnes. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, magnesium exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed resilient growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Austria (X tonnes) was the main destination for magnesium exports from Italy, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, magnesium exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Croatia (X tonnes), threefold. Germany (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with an X% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Austria amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (+X% per year) and Germany (+X% per year).
In value terms, Austria ($X), Germany ($X) and Norway ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for magnesium exported from Italy worldwide, together accounting for X% of total exports. Poland, Slovenia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Sweden, the UK, France, Spain and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X, with a CAGR of +X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average magnesium export price stood at $X per tonne in 2021, rising by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, magnesium export price increased by +X% against 2016 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Italy
Magnesium imports into Italy surged to X tonnes in 2021, jumping by X% on the previous year. Overall, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tonnes in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, magnesium imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tonnes) constituted the largest magnesium supplier to Italy, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, magnesium imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (X tonnes), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by the Netherlands (X tonnes), with an X% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+X% per year) and the Netherlands (+X% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of magnesium to Italy, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by the Netherlands ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Austria, with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+X% per year) and Austria (+X% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average magnesium import price amounted to $X per tonne, rising by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per tonne in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per tonne), while the price for Luxembourg ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+X%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
