In 2021, shipments abroad of magnesium was finally on the rise to reach X tonnes for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tonnes. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, magnesium exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed resilient growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Austria (X tonnes) was the main destination for magnesium exports from Italy, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, magnesium exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Croatia (X tonnes), threefold. Germany (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with an X% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Austria amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (+X% per year) and Germany (+X% per year).

Overall, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tonnes in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
