Dolomite Exports

Exports from Italy

In 2021, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of chalk and dolomite, when their volume decreased by -13.4% to X tons. In general, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 37%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, dolomite exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +102.5% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

France (X tons), the United States (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the main destinations of dolomite exports from Italy, together accounting for 97% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +30.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for chalk and dolomite exports from Italy, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 30% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 2.2% share.

The average dolomite export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of chalk and dolomite increased by 9.4% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +9.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dolomite imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +58.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of dolomite to Italy, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, dolomite imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany stood at +6.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-10.1% per year) and the Netherlands (+15.1% per year).

In value terms, the largest dolomite suppliers to Italy were Germany ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 76% share of total imports. Belgium, Brazil and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

Among the main suppliers, Brazil, with a CAGR of +118.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average dolomite import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 8.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 33% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
