Copper Market Size in Iran

The Iranian copper market dropped slightly to $X in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 9.5%. Copper consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Copper Production in Iran

In value terms, copper production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Copper Exports

Exports from Iran

In 2022, after four years of decline, there was growth in overseas shipments of copper, when their volume increased by 0.6% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 186%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, copper exports totaled $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 194% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

China (X tons) was the main destination for copper exports from Iran, accounting for a 92% share of total exports. Moreover, copper exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Turkey (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China stood at +20.8%.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for copper exports from Iran, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China stood at +14.6%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average copper export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 2.9%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (-2.0%).

Imports into Iran

In 2022, overseas purchases of copper were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, copper imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) was the main supplier of copper to Iran, accounting for a 95% share of total imports. Moreover, copper imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X kg), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +24.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-29.5% per year) and Turkey (-21.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of copper to Iran, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 22% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to +16.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (-13.5% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-35.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average copper import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -52.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 125% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then plummeted in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+9.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
