Unmanufactured Tobacco Market Size in Indonesia

In 2020, after three years of growth, there was decline in the Indonesian unmanufactured tobacco market, when its value decreased by -X% to $X. Overall, consumption recorded a buoyant increase. The average yield of tobacco (unmanufactured) in Indonesia was estimated at X kg per ha in 2020, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2007 to 2020; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011 when the yield increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the average unmanufactured tobacco yield reached the maximum level in 2020 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports fell to $X in 2020. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Exports peaked at $X in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

The Dominican Republic (X tonnes), Singapore (X tonnes) and the U.S. (X tonnes) were the main destinations of unmanufactured tobacco exports from Indonesia, together comprising X% of total exports. These countries were followed by Belgium, China, the Netherlands, Germany, the Philippines, Italy, Poland, the United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in the United Arab Emirates (+X% per year), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for unmanufactured tobacco exported from Indonesia worldwide, together comprising X% of total exports. The Dominican Republic, Sri Lanka, the U.S., China, the Netherlands, the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates, Poland and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X United Arab Emirates (+X% per year) saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average unmanufactured tobacco export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, jumping by X% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2020, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. Over the period under review, average export prices hit record highs at $X per tonne in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to the U.S. ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, supplies from abroad of tobacco (unmanufactured) decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2007 to 2020: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, imports decreased by -X% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tonnes in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports declined to $X in 2020. Overall, imports, however, saw a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2020, China (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of unmanufactured tobacco to Indonesia, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, unmanufactured tobacco imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (X tonnes), twofold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Zimbabwe (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+X% per year) and Zimbabwe (+X% per year).

The average unmanufactured tobacco import price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, shrinking by -X% against the previous year. Over the last thirteen-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009 when the average import price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per tonne in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, import prices failed to regain the momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was the U.S. ($X per tonne), while the price for Pakistan ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy, while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
